To me, one of the greatest tragedies in life is not knowing or acknowledging your power. I believe it is tragic because it means you will easily accept who other people say you are. It means you will spend your entire life trying to fit into a particular box. You will try to please people who, most times, are not relevant to your journey and growth. Instead of showing the world the awesomeness that is you, spreading your light and achieving your goals, you might end up leaving this world with a lot of untapped potential.
As a teenager, I wasted a lot of time doing things to feel “loved and accepted.” I like to blame it on sad events that happened to me as a young girl but, either way, I made decisions and acted in many ways that I shouldn’t have. When I look back, I laugh and say to myself, “Girl, what were you even thinking?” because years passed and many mistakes were made in the process. Years that I could have spent investing in myself and loving myself. Years that I could have spent fulfilling my little dreams or even helping people fulfill theirs. Years that I could have spent putting smiles on many faces. But all isn’t lost, right? Because I now know better.
Fast forward… I’m a big girl now haha. Time and experiences have made me see things differently. I now have so much confidence in myself. I love and believe in myself and won’t live a lie, because I have now come to realize that everything I’ve ever dreamt of can actually be my reality.
Sadly, there are millions of young girls and women who can relate. A lot of them who have to live in a certain way to feel important, or to feel “among.”
Many who believe they have to comply to society’s expectations. Many who don’t feel confident in who they are. Many who struggle daily with one pain or the other – not having flawless skin, a snatched waist, curly hair, perfect grades, designer bags, “the” dream job or big buttocks among others.
Hey there girl! Hey there woman! I want you to know that there is no one like you and that’s enough reason to feel special. That’s enough reason to live everyday believing you are a queen, literally. I want you to know that you decide your value and worth. Don’t give anyone that much power to decide it for you.
I want every girl and woman out there to know that it takes strength and courage to not just choose who you are but to find a way to own yourself. You may live everyday fighting battles and winning every time. Yet even if you lose, you can still get back on track with that same fighting spirit.
I want you to know and believe that being female isn’t a curse or a plague but a superpower! The whole world doesn’t have to accept that truth. You only need you to accept it.
I want every girl and woman out there to embrace herself – her skin, hair, flaws, strengths and weaknesses because together, they make her unique.
Being you is what makes you beautiful!
I want you to be so satisfied in who you are that you don’t feel threatened by another. Rather, you help others to see that they are also queens.
To close this, I want you to forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made and will probably make. I want you to forgive yourself for the years that you slept on you and were blinded to your magnificence. You’ve been a star all along; you just needed some time to realize it. I hope you do now.
