In February, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Programa ACC, thanks to my journey with the Your Best Life (YBL) team as a YBL scholarship recipient. Programa ACC is a Costa Rican-based organization that was birthed as a response to the environmental degradation and climate change challenge that exist in our world. I was truly inspired by the experience and that deep feeling resulted in the writing of the piece below:
“I come from Nigeria; I am a daughter of Mama Africa…but I am first the worlds. I am humanity before race, socio-cultural beliefs, religion, or any other part of me so great that my very being can or cannot do without.
Where I come from, climate change is almost as laughable as if it were a comedy central night out with Kevin Hart. Not because we can’t feel the sun angrily roasting our melanin skins even further, not because we can’t tell that the day’s degrees fluctuate rapidly but climate change is a phenomenon so distant from our reality of gender inequality, corruption and educational gaps. The globe warming up can’t be our reality. Or is it already?
They say, leave your footprints in the sands of time. Well, at the rate our world is running, all that will be left is just the sands minus time and definitely without any human footprint.
So what can and should we do? Every and anything! We owe it not just to our future but even to our generation’s past. We owe it to the birds that simply want to chirp and sing, the fishes that ask for nothing but a bath in the cool currents of our waters. We owe it to our oceans, our mountains and hills, our deserts. We owe it to ourselves; we owe our planet.
So, we can start from where we are, plant one tiny tree at a time, a tree that will sink its roots deep into the earth and give her hope. Yes, fresh hope!
From Costa Rica, to Australia to Asia to Africa, to the Americas. It doesn’t have to end you know; our world doesn’t have to take a bow just yet. Programa ACC has given me the opportunity to plant those trees growing by their numbers to help save our world.
If I can, then you also can. Together, we indeed can change our world…one tree at a time.”
Special thanks also goes to Ijafiada Grace, the Head of Content Creation at Wadi Ben-Hirki Foundation, for helping me work on this piece.
